Having a splash at the Geraldton Aquarena is now an option for more of our community thanks to a generous donation from the Midwest Community Living Association (MWCLA).

Six slings were donated to assist individuals who may have mobility challenges to safely enter and exit the hydrotherapy pool.

The funds to purchase the slings were raised through MWCLA’s operation of Jack’s Shed which recycles newspapers.

91黑料网 Mayor Jerry Clune thanked the organisation for their donation, which will benefit the community for many years to come.

“Accessibility remains a top priority for the City and we are committed to establishing a community without barriers,” he said.

“I would like to sincerely thank MWCLA for their contribution to helping to boost access and inclusion at one of our most popular facilities and within our community.

“The current slings had reached their end of life so this donation will go a long way in helping people of all abilities access our hydrotherapy pool.”

Jack’s Shed has been a popular newspaper recycling hub since it opened in 1995.

Initially run by Aquarena User Group volunteers, funds raised at Jack’s Shed have gone back into the Aquarena for things such as lane ropes, starting blocks and inflatables including the BIFF and SMIFF.

In 2023 MWCLA took over the operation of Jack’s Shed which has since given many of their customers the opportunity to volunteer their time to a meaningful and rewarding cause.

MWCLA Programs and Camps Coordinator Jo Luxton said the donation brings meaningful benefits to the whole community.

“It enhances access to the hydrotherapy pool for people who rely on this vital facility for their health and wellbeing—including our customers who collect and bundle newspapers for recycling to raise funds that go back into supporting the community,” she said.

“This contribution reflects our shared commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and building a stronger, more connected Geraldton for everyone.”

Businesses who would like their newspapers to be picked up and recycled can contact MWCLA for more information on 9921 1505 or email enquiries@mwcla.org.au

Access and inclusion falls under the “Connected” theme of the Strategic Community Plan which reflects the organisation’s commitment to a community where everyone feels included.
